"The Science of Forgiveness"
Forgiveness is the action by which one person forgives another for something considered to be offensive, waiving any claim on revenge or punishment for the offender and opting not to take the offensive behaviour into account in the future. Forgivess doesn't always have to be directed towards another person, it is also possible to forgive oneself.
"Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned." said Buddha. Negative feelings such as anger, impotence or disappointment will damage us, whether aimed at ourselves or at another person or situation that has hurt us. They overwhelm and "conquer" us.
We tend to ask if we are worthy of forgiveness, or whether the person who has hurt us, intentionally or not, deserves to be forgiven. Forgiveness doesn`t come from the mind. It's not logical. True forgiveness comes from the heart when we are ready to surrender our own point of view. Otherwise, forgiveness will only be partial and superficial.
Life is like a river. Despite all the obstacles in it's course, it never ceases to flow. We must find a way of continuing to flow without becoming "stagnant". Forgiveness allows emotional wounds to heal, it allows us to leave the past behind and evolve.
If we are connected to our inner self, our soul, we are connected to an unlimited source of energy. This energy, together with enthusiasm, allows us to overcome obstacles, forgive and advance in life without worrying about possible failiures. If we allow this energy to weaken, we will lose the capacity to act in the future and will no longer live in a genuine way.
Forgiveness is experienced at a personal level and requires a change of both thougt and behaviour. A person who is capable of forgiveness will have the respect of others, even their enemies. Contrary to what is often thought, forgiveness is not a sign of weakness, but a true science that requires valour and courage.
This talk is the introduction to the seminar that will be held on Saturday March 2nd at the same venue.
